I am Evidence Makuni, born in Masvingo Province’s lowveld on December 1, 1987, to Abraham Walter Makuni and Sarah Stella Magombedze. My parents divorced when I was a few months old, and I was raised by my mother until I completed Advanced Level.
I reconnected with my father in Form 3 (2004). In 2006, I wrote a Shona book, Pfumo Repamwoyo, a partially lost manuscript due to its outdated style. From my teenage years, I developed a passion for writing in both Shona and English.
I was inspired by the creative wordplay of Shona writers like Mordecai Abenia Hamutyinei, Renias Mashira, and Ignatius Mabasa, and English-language authors such as Dambudzo Marechera, Charles Mungoshi, Tsitsi Dangarembga, Robert Ludlum, Wilbur Smith, Louis L’Amour, Charles Dickens, and Thomas Hardy, who shaped my writing.
I recently published a Shona book, Kuredza muchirongo (Fishing in a Waterpot), a metaphorical title referring to wasting time doing an unproductive duty or to do a duty which yielded limited results because of limited place, time or resources.
Inspired by the abuse of power, corruption, and cronyism in Zimbabwe, the book explores themes of fighting for true love, patriotism, constitutional adherence, and upholding the rule of law, regardless of political position.
It features Detective Sergeant Admire Pamire investigating crimes committed by Senator Peter Gumedhe, highlighting the need for integrity within government at all levels. Kuredza muchirongo is intended for Shona speakers worldwide, especially students, to promote a future of zero tolerance for corruption and increased trust in government.
The book also explores the complexities of love in a materialistic world. It is published traditionally by ProScripts Publishers and the author, Evidence Makuni.
I plan to publish several more Shona books, including Riva Rabata Nyoka, Wanano Bodo! Neighbouring Echoes, Hakuna Mufaro Zvachose, Manyepo! Greediness: A confused world, and Sour Vengeance.
